The Practice

Oakland Ophthalmic Surgery, P.C. is a private practice, specializing in the complete medical and surgical care of the eye. Each of our physicians is board-certified by The American Academy of Ophthalmology.

Oakland Ophthalmic Surgery, P.C. has been providing quality eye care to the community for over 60 years. Dr. Ralph M. Fox founded the Birmingham practice in 1951 and was the first to specialize in ophthalmology in Oakland County. Dr. Fox completed his medical training and residency at The University of Michigan, as did Dr. William M. Cutler who joined him in practice five years later.

In 1975, Robert L. Stephenson, M.D., who completed his ophthalmology residency at Henry Ford Hospital, became a member of Oakland Ophthalmic Surgery, P.C. Dr. Cutler and Dr. Stephenson were among the first ophthalmic surgeons to perform the intro-ocular lens implant procedure following cataract surgery. They both were instrumental in developing the Ophthalmology Residency Program at William Beaumont Hospital, where they taught anterior segment surgery to the ophthalmology residents. Dr. Stephenson was one of the early ophthalmic surgeons to perform phaco-emusification cataract surgery and to also train the residents in this innovative technique.

John R. Suchomel, M.D., former Director of the Ophthalmology Residency Program at William Beaumont Hospital, joined Oakland Ophthalmic Surgery, P.C. in 1989 and was with the practice until 1997. Before Dr. Suchomel’s departure, Sheldon D. Stern, M.D., who trained at the Indiana University School of Medicine, merged his practice with ours. Shortly thereafter, Robert C. Erickson, M.D., who had completed his residency in ophthalmology at William Beaumont Hospital and was practicing ophthalmology in Virginia, decided to relocate to Michigan and join our team of physicians at Oakland Ophthalmic Surgery, P.C. Timothy P. Page, M.D., who also completed his residency in ophthalmology at William Beaumont Hospital, became a member of Oakland Ophthalmic Surgery, P.C. in the year 2000, after being in private practice for two years in another area of Michigan. Dr. Erickson and Dr. Page continue to be very active in the surgical training of residents at William Beaumont Hospital. Their philanthropic work has taken them to remote areas of South America and Africa to treat those in need of eye care, both medically and surgically.

In August of 2010, Oakland Ophthalmic Surgery, P.C. welcomed Maria Jancevski, M.D., who completed her residency at Henry Ford Hospital and a fellowship in uveitis at Harvard University. Dr. Jancevski is one of only a select few ophthalmologists practicing this specialty in the United States.

Our physicians, with the support of an accomplished staff, have been, and continue to be, outstanding in the field of ophthalmology, consistently recognized and honored as among the most skilled and excellent doctors in the medical and surgical care of the eye—‘the most important square inch in the human body.’ It is for this reason, Oakland Ophthalmic Surgery, P.C. is considered to be one of the finest ophthalmology practices.
